“Horse Feed Tubs are very important for your horse health and well being”

There is a Spanish proverb “A horse is worth more than riches”. A horse is more beneficial and useful to us. It gives us love, compassion, and just like the phrase “A dog is man’s best friend”, people who love horses feel there is no better companion than a horse.

Indeed there is a lot one can learn from these equestrians as they lead a very healthy and fit life no wonder there is a saying be as fit as a horse.

These equine species are not only graceful, intelligent and strong but are also virtuous and very loving animals.

A horse maybe a companion animal, a farm hand or a race horse, whatever be its use it lives for a long time on the farm as compared to other farm animals, therefore feeding them is a very important aspect of their lives.

Horses living in a natural environment would graze upon the wild grass as these are suited for their small stomachs.

But today with the shrinking natural habitats and more of these equestrians living in paddocks, care has to be taken regarding their feed and the tubs used for feeding them.

The hanging nets are also not recommended as they do not allow the animals to eat naturally with their head down and it causes further problems.

Even though horses are such beloved animals keeping one is not everyone’s cup of tea. They are expensive and you need a lot of open land to keep one. One needs to give a lot of attention to their grooming, horse feed and maintenance.

There is large number of mental, physical and social benefits of owning a horse. They help the younger generation by building their confidence and self-esteem.  Regular grooming and washing of these animals helps in relaxing the nerves and is a great stress buster.

Owning an equestrian helps enthusiasts bond with each other and develops friendships. Last but not the least they keep you active by making you do all their chores which help build your muscle and bone, and keep you fit and happy.

Position of Best Horse Feed Tubs

Most feeding tubs and hay nets or racks are positioned above the ground to keep the area clean and to prevent them from spilling over by the moving fore legs.

This is an unnatural position for the animal as a horse’s body is designed for eating at ground level.

In natural environment the horse puts its head down to eat and the lower jaw drops forward and when the horse lifts it’s head to chew the jaw slides back into place.

The fore and back movement of the jaw grinds the teeth and keeps them of correct length. Thus preventing any abnormalities in their teeth.

When horses eat with their head down their jaws function properly and this helps in easier digestion of their food. They are able to produce more saliva which aids their digestion.

The air passage in the nostrils and head also works properly when the horse keeps its head low along the ground.

If it inhales some dust or any other particles they don’t affect the membranes in the airway thus keeping them disease free, but when the head is at a higher position while feeding a bend is created in the airway which is very harmful for the animal.

Along with hay the dust particles inhaled get attached to the bent in the airway and go into the mucous membranes. This forms a pathway for the germs and viruses leading to diseases like heaves.

When the horse feed tub is higher than the ground level it causes the spine of the animal to be suspended and creates tension in the ligaments whenever the animal raises and lowers its head.

Compared to feeding on the ground where there is reduced strain and the animal maintains its proper posture. The best horse feed tubs should be placed on the ground.

Thus care should be taken to make sure the animal remains in its natural position when being fed.

Since in the natural environment it feeds 18-20 hours care should also be take that its large gut doesn’t remain empty for long periods as this can affect the lining in the stomach and intestines.

Maintenance of Horse feed Tubs

Feeding the horses is an important aspect in the stable and a lot of importance is given to the diet, But imagine after putting in the effort of creating a good nutritious feed for your pet only to find the horse feed tub dirty and sticky- “what a disgusting feeling”.

While to a horse it doesn’t make much of a difference as he is only interested in the food but a clean and well managed stable is a sign of healthy environment.  A spick and span feeding bucket, tub or containers is a sure sign of love and care for the pet.

Horses kept in stables and confined to barns as compared to wild or pasture horses will have a large number of buckets and horse feed tubs which are hung on the walls.

They need to be removed frequently and thoroughly scrubbed clean. This periodic cleaning will also depend on the feed given to the horses.

If they are fed pelleted concentrates from the bag or oats there will be very little mess as the only residue will be dust and hull.

But on the other hand during the hot months, that is spring and summer,  if they are given sweet feeds which have molasses a sticky grime will accumulate on the inside and rim of the horse feed tubs.

On top of this if corn oil or any other liquid supplement is given to the animal it will become grimy and disgusting.

The heat will attract flies and other insects to the best horse feed tubs thus making them revolting and offensive. Therefore regular cleaning done once or twice a week is a must to maintain a healthy stable.

Periodic cleaning is important during winter months too to maintain the hygiene of the horse feed tubs.

The horse feed tubs can be cleaned with mild detergents used for washing clothes and a stiff scrubber or a brush. Wash with water and drain out the detergent and the grime. After washing use a dilute bleach solution to disinfect the tubs.

The solution should be allowed to sit in the tub for 10-12 minutes and then thrown and rinsed properly with drinkable water. The buckets and feed tubs can be disinfected with Nolvasan, which is a bactericide and viricide that kills pathogens which cause diseases like flu.

Horses that remain on the pastures are fed in hard rubber or plastic feeders. These are kept on the ground or maybe attached to the fences.

They also become highly soiled as they are exposed to the natural elements like rain.

Like the once’s in the stables these also have to be regularly cleaned and disinfected to keep the animals healthy.

Summation

Clean feeding buckets and best horse feed tubs is a sign of good management. A clean and well maintained barn with clean stables will have healthy animals that will perform better in whichever task that is assigned to them.

Someone has rightly said that a horse is a projection of one’s dream about himself and has the capability to help him escape his mundane existence.
