Uses of English Reins

Reins are used for implicit orders or signals, also called reins aids. Different commands will signal a switch, request a slower speed, request a stop or return.

  • Rein aids are used in combination with leg support, body weight changes and voice controls at times.
  • Riding with well-weighted reins encourages your horse to expect ample slowness, as you feel the tug of gravity downwards.
  • Draw reins are used for saddle schooling; side reins are primarily used for quantitative work and hand training.
  • A holder may be connected to or guide a horse or packhorse with a single rope or leash.
  • A long rein called a long line can be used for the purpose of the horse’s training or a professional veterinarian evaluation for the purposes of going into a circle.

For certain designs, a third English rein, used for leading, longing or other technical or stylistic purposes, may be attached to the paired reins.

Advantages of a English Rein

It teaches the horse to feel trustworthy, to step outside to discover the big wide world is an exciting place, and not something to worry about.

  • Before backing a horse, can learn how to turn left and right without the weight of the driver, stop and move forwards at your order. The young horse gets used to feeling the bit (contact).
  • Excellent method to retrain a horse, to build confidence. It is great for working with a horse which cannot be driven under a saddle, e.g. a sore back.
  • Two-way ropes give better control over the back. You can also teach lateral work; the options are endless.

How to choose the right Horse Rein

The longer the rein the better your horse can sense what you are doing, and the more subtle is the indication that you are capable of giving.

Anyway, your horse can feel the rein released straight away when he is made from high-quality leather or corn, and he learns to respond.

  • If you use reins made of cheap, lightweight materials, your horse will not feel the reins and will find it hard to feel your rein helps. It means that you are dragging yourself more than you should.
  • There are not many Weichel reins, and it becomes hard for you to feel the reins balanced when made from lightweight leather or nylon webbing.
  • Your horse can sense your hand’s motions and balance more comfortably with high-quality leather or a thick marine surface.
  • He should know what you want because the weight of the reins resonates from your side to the slightest movement.

Different types of reins

Split Reins

For Western pleasure or Western horsemanship training, split reins are usually used. The reins don’t bind each other unless at the end you tie them up in a knot that some riders are doing.

The split reins are flat and smooth, usually between 6 and 8 feet long.

Closed reins

A single piece of material–leather, ties, nylon, polyester and other materials-is created in the closed reins. We stick to the bit and walk around the neck of the horse.

These are commonly used in rodeo and working animals because they don’t slip under the horse or get caught up in them if they are lost.

Romel reins are a variant of the closed ring, other than an adhesive, which can be used to enable a horse to go forward.

Mecate

Only with a bosal hackamore bridle are the unique mecate rein used.

Made from rope or horsehair, the mecate are tied in a special kind of knot to the bottom of the bosal, wrapped over the neck of the horse, and then attached.
